Description

As a prototype, the SD40-2 was the most popular second-generation diesel with sales of over 3000 in the U.S. and more than 700 in Canada. There were many variations of this popular diesel because of the long production run.

A common BNSF paint scheme, the "pumpkin" green and orange colors of the BNSF Heritage I paint scheme mirror the colors of the Great Northern Railroad. The original cross and circle company logo is displayed on the nose of the locomotive, indicative of the Heritage I coloration (Heritage II paint schemes using a "cigar band" logo reminiscent of the ATSF logo or a newer, more modern BNSF logo on the Heritage III).
